After Freiburg, my next destination was Amsterdam and to my surprise… it was raining! LOL (If you have been in Amsterdam, you’ll know rain is part of its everyday life.) For the first time in my life, I actually enjoyed the rain. It was beautiful!
It was really nice to see the more local side of Amsterdam. I’ve visited this city as a turist during my master in Freiburg but this time I wanted to experience it as a local.
A wondeful Spanish couple hosted me in their appartment in Jordaan. From there I had access to local coffee shops where I could sit for hours with my coffee and get some work done. Sometimes I also stayed at home. My hosts also work from home so the wifi and the working space were perfect for me.
The following day, I joined my friend at WeWork, one of the biggest and best known coworking spaces. I was really amazed about all the services they offer. From shared and private working stations to free beer and games at the top floor. I had a great day coworking with my friend and even used their skype booths for an interview. Definitely recommend it! Even if it might seem a bit pricy, the quality of what they offer is worth it.
On my third day, I joined my friend and colleague from the Cheeky Scientist Association Jackie at the Public Library for a working date. After getting some work done (with a few girly talk in between), we headed to the Cheeky Scientist meetup where we joined other 5 like-minded scientists and had a great time together.
The last day of my stay in Amsterdam, we met again with Jackie at Lokaal Edel, a beautiful place by the canal (I’m not sure the is something ‘not by the canal’ in Amsterdam though) with great food and a nice quiet working atmosphere.
I must say that I enjoyed this visit to Amsterdam in a completely different way. I joined the local lifestyle and were still able to get my work done even while traveling. I’m not sure that it is the best long-term stay for digital nomads since it’s quite expensive to live there, but it’s definitely a great place to visit while in Europe without sacrifizing your remote work.
