Not Everything Goes as Expected: Varna, Bulgaria

Many people tend to think that the life of a digital nomad is all about hanging out with your computer at a beautiful beach. Yes, many times we do, but this is not always the case.

I planned my trip to Varna (Bulgaria) as soon as I arrived to Prague. I was told about the beautiful beaches, great weather, and amazing organic fruits and veggies. At that time I was craving for some time at the beach, so I booked an airbnb for one week, made sure it has good wifi and is close to the beach and the city center (it was located 300 m from the local ‘cathedral’).

It was the last week of the high season in Europe, so I basically booked the last available seat in the only daily flight in and out Varna. (Note for my future self: don’t travel anywhere the first or last week of the high season)

As soon as I arrived, I felt a bit strange. The place was amazing: the beach was beautiful, my accomodation had everything I needed, and wifi was strong.

However, the vibe wasn’t inviting me to neither work nor enjoy the beach. The place was full of tourists, families with kids, groups of friends partying at the beach, the local stores were only selling food or beachwear, and the local ‘cathedral’ was a wooden hut.

The atmosphere and the vibe were not inviting me to focus on work nor to enjoy the beach as everyone else was doing. People think that if you’re a digital nomad any place should work for you but it’s not always the case.

After struggling for a few days, I decided that Varna was not for me (at least not at that moment of my life) so I booked a flight back home. Since everything was fully booked due to the high season, I only managed to find a flight to Brno, a city in the Czech Republic located 2 hours South East of Prague.

In the end, being a digital nomad allowed me to be flexible and follow my instinct. Not only I didn’t stay in a place where I wasn’t comfortable but also I saw another beautiful city in the Czech Republic which I would probably never visited otherwise.

Everything happens for a reason! 🙂

Love,

Jenia

PS: The funniest situation that I had to deal with was giving a training webinar to our writers 1 hour before my flight out of Varna from the garden of the only hotel that I could find with good wifi… Almost missed my flight btw… LOL
